Volunteers Shape Their Community

Volunteering is an inspiring way to accomplish neighborhood goals together and a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbors.

Barnard Place Park welcomes Boston residents to join-in by becoming active volunteers. Through your volunteer support, we can ensure Barnard Place Park will provide a beautiful, open space for the public to enjoy for many years to come.

Pattie McCormick, Associate Director of Development of the Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club, and Chantha Toeum, Pre-Teen Program Manager, collaborate semi-annually with Barnard Place Park to create a variety of gardening experiences for the Club's pre-teen members to cultivate their gardening skills while giving back to the local community as hands-on volunteers— digging in to install seasonal plantings.  We are so excited about this program. It is a wonderful neighborhood partnership through which the Boys & Girls Club utilize Barnard Place Park as an ongoing laboratory, a place to continue to learn about growing and caring for annual & perennial plants, shrubs, trees, vegetables, and herbs.

Additional Barnard Place Park Volunteer Opportunities include:

  • BPP's Annual Recreational Bocce Tournament Fundraising Event— to help support park maintenance.
  • Ongoing Landscape Care— shrubs, plants and trees need TLC throughout the year.
    • Help weed garden beds, prune shrubs, refresh & plant containers, and rake leaves.
    • Bocce court maintenance entails raking and regrading the court as needed. If bocce is your passion, we could use your help!
  • Simple Tidying Up— weekly chores
    • Furniture cleaning, sweeping pavers, removal of spent leaves
    • Seasonal preparations and structural repairs

If there are volunteer activities in which you would like to participate, we would love to hear from you.
Let’s have some fun!

Edgerley Family SB Boys & Girls Club Gardening Event

The Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club and neighborhood children are focused on Courtney Goode (GLS) as she demonstrates how deep to plant the various 150 bulbs for our first gardening club event. Anne Gordon (BGCB), Kayla Murgo (GLS), Pat T. (BP resident) look on.

Jennifer (BGCB), Rita, Pat S., Joanne, and Evan (BP residents) watch Courtney's demonstration.

Ready to put our new gardening knowledge to work everyone rolled up their sleeves to get the job done.

Rita and Ronan help  to accomplish the goal of planting 150 crocus, daffodil, and muscari bulbs to bloom in the spring.

Thank you Anne Gordon and the Boys & Girls Club children along with the Barnard Place families for making this a wonderful event. We look forward to sharing the fruits of our labor with the community early next year!

Big thanks to Keep Massachusetts Beautiful for providing the bulbs for this event and the South Boston Community Development Foundation for their major support of the Barnard Place Park and Edgerley Family South Boston Boys & Girls Club gardening program!
